 Problem-solving

Problem-solving is an essential life skill that everyone must learn, develop and master in order to become successful. It involves the ability to think critically and creatively to come up with solutions to difficult challenges. This essay will explore the importance of problem-solving and the different strategies to successfully complete it. Throughout this essay, different personal experiences and stories will be provided to illustrate the complexities of problem solving. By the end, it is my hope that the reader will understand the value of problem solving and understand how to apply it to their own lives.

Approaching problem solving can be approached in a variety of ways and may depend on individual preferences and experiences. Generally speaking, an effective problem-solving approach involves as a few steps, such as: gathering information related to the problem, understanding the problem, and brainstorming and developing possible solutions (Bleiweiss, 2019). It is important to take a logical order to solving the problem, considering both the short- and long-term impacts of any potential solution (Robb, 2020). From there it is important to present your solution and evaluate the effectiveness of the solution, ensuring that it solves the problem (Robb, 2020). Following these necessary steps can help ensure an effective process for problem solving. Works Cited Bleiweiss, L. (2019, October 11). Six problem-solving steps. When tackling a problem, it is important to use a systematic and organized approach to solving (Hudleston, 2017). One way to approach a problem is to use the scientific method, breaking it into multiple steps: formulating a problem, gathering information, formulating hypotheses, testing the hypothesis, analyzing the results, and determining a solution (Berkeley Science Review, 2018). The scientific method is an effective way to approach problems due to the structured process it provides. Additionally, it helps to ensure an unbiased and factual answer is determined. For more complex problems where multiple approaches can be taken, it may be beneficial to brainstorm and create a list of potential options (Best, 2017). This helps to inspire new ideas and increase the chances of finding an appropriate solution. References Berkeley Science Review. (2018). Problem solving is a cognitive process that involves discovering, analyzing, and solving problems. It involves approaching a problem in a systematic, structured, logical and creative manner to come up with the most effective and efficient solution (New York University, 2020). Problem solving is not a one-time event, but is a continuous process that involves learning and adapting as the situation changes. It is also an iterative process, allowing us to find better solutions with each iteration (Kurzweil Education, 2020). Problem solving involves identifying the problem, forming goals, analyzing the problem, generating potential solutions, investigating and choosing a solution, and implementing the solution (International Institute for Learning, 2020). The ability to effectively solve problems is a valuable and important skill that can be applied to any area of life, from work to relationships.

Problem-solving can become more difficult when we are not being clear and specific about the short and long-term goals we want to achieve. Limiting data and information, as to what would typically be used to solve the problem, can also create more of a challenge. According to a study in The Japan Times, "In problem-solving, wide open-endedness of the task can lead to discouragement and frustration due to ambiguity and the difficulty of forming specific objectives for problem-solving (Matsuo, 2016)." Consequently, it is helpful to identify goals first and then obtain the data, facts, and ideas needed to achieve them.

In conclusion, problem solving is an important skill to possess, particularly in academic and professional settings. Effective problem solving requires that one has the capability to think critically, analyze information, and develop solutions that best address the situation. Furthermore, having the right attitude and mindset when engaging in problem solving is essential in order to recognize solutions that can help one move forward. Through practice and learning, one can become proficient in problem solving and be better suited to tackle the various complications that life can present.
